OMERS Sydney office raises over $12,000 AUD for children's cancer
May 11, 2026

OMERS employees believe in going the extra mile (or kilometre); not just in the office, but for meaningful causes as well.
Recently, 16 members of the team at our Sydney, Australia office took part in Children's Cancer Institute Australia's (CCI) 86K for a Cure challenge, each walking over 86 kilometres in a month in tribute to the 86 children in Australia diagnosed with cancer every month.
They laced up their shoes, strapped on their smartwatches and collectively covered enough ground to make a real difference in the fight against childhood cancer. Most importantly, they raised funds for their efforts, contributing over $12,000 AUD to support groundbreaking research to develop safer, more targeted treatments and move one step closer to finding a cure once and for all.
From one step at a time to 1,664 kilometres
As the office’s first challenge of this kind, the team set a conservative fundraising goal of $4,000 AUD. What followed exceeded all expectations. By the end of the challenge, the team had collectively logged over 1,664 kilometres, with some members going well beyond the minimum through dedicated walks and runs on top of their everyday movement. Six team members each raised over $1,000 AUD individually, a testament to the generosity of their personal networks.
The team also benefited from CCI’s anonymous matched funding partners, helping amplify the impact of every donation. What began as a $4,000 goal ultimately became $12,639 AUD raised for vital childhood cancer research.
Why it matters
CCI’s belief is simple, and it’s one the OMERS Sydney office shares: a life should be long. Every child deserves the chance to grow up, dream big and chase their future. The funds raised through challenges like 86K for a Cure directly support research into safer, more targeted cancer treatments; because the goal isn't just survival. It's a long, healthy life.
For our Sydney team, this was more than a fitness goal. It was a meaningful first step in a relationship they're proud to be part of, and one they're already looking forward to building on.
