Mississauga park renamed to Philippine Park to celebrate the city’s rich multicultural heritage

In a joint effort between OMERS employer, City of Mississauga and volunteer-led Philippine Park Association (PPA), a local Mississauga park was renamed to Philippine Park to honour the contributions of Filipino Canadians to the city and to continue serving as a gathering space for cultural and community events.

Mississauga City Council unanimously approved the park renaming on June 11, 2025. The City collects community feedback on proposed names for City assets, including parks. A decision to name or rename City assets follows a set of guiding principles, such as ensuring the name celebrates Mississauga’s diverse communities and culture.

The PPA is working with the City and local organizations to organize cultural and educational programming at the park, promoting Filipino heritage to residents. Ideas include a Wall of Heroes to recognize prominent historical figures and a pavilion designed in the style of traditional salakot (dome or cone-shaped Filipino headgear).

Earl Francis Dacara, internal vice-president and treasurer of the PPA, describes the City’s decision as a “celebration shared by Filipino leaders and community members” who had been working toward this project for years.

“We believe that cultural appreciation brings communities together,” he said.

Philippine Park is located north of Matheson Boulevard East, between Satellite Drive and Orbitor Drive in Mississauga.
