We’re delighted to share that we recently announced our commitment to a Net Zero 2050 greenhouse gas emissions goal for the portfolio, building on our Sustainable Investing program and following the initial goal to reduce the carbon intensity of our portfolio by 20% by 2025. Setting our Net Zero 2050 goal is a major step for us, and we believe it is the right thing to do.

OMERS commits to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

Blake Hutcheson, our Chief Executive Officer and President, said of the news: “Our near-term carbon reduction goals are tangible, actionable, and ensure our leadership team is accountable today. With our Net Zero 2050 goal, we believe we are charting the right course for our future. We are also confident that we can do this by working with governments and other conscientious Canadian and global businesses in the months and years ahead.”

In other news, we’re thrilled that the Investor Leadership Network (ILN), a leading network of investors taking action for people, planet, and prosperity, announced recently that Blake will become one of two new leaders of its CEO Council. Blake will join Marc-André Blanchard, Executive Vice-President and Head of CDPQ Global, as a Co-Chair of the ILN CEO Council, beginning in January.

Blake said of the appointment: “When it comes to advancing sustainable investing practices, institutional investors have an important role to play as both influencers and partners. OMERS support of ILN is consistent with our belief that well-run companies with sound ESG practices will perform better over time, something that is critical to us as a long-term investor acting on behalf of our 525,000 members”.
