On track to inclusion: Metrolinx journeys ahead with new accessibility digital guides
October 29, 2024
Transit systems are complicated.
An intricate web of interconnected lines, routes, schedules and stations, even the most seasoned riders can find themselves caught off guard by unanticipated changes, the constant flux of people, and other variables that will often impact a given journey. It can be an overwhelming experience for just about anyone.
For those with cognitive challenges, however, these complexities can pose an even greater barrier. That’s why it’s so important for critical public systems like transit – often a lifeline for many individuals – to continuously adapt and evolve their accessibility efforts.
OMERS employer Metrolinx in particular is accelerating its work in making its Ontario-wide transit systems more inclusive and user-friendly, introducing step-by-step digital guides to support riders with autism and other neurodiverse conditions navigate its various networks and processes.
Partnering with MagnusCards, an application tailored to assist individuals with cognitive special needs, Metrolinx has launched more than 20 digital card guides through the app since December 2023 to help users familiarize themselves with its transit systems and build confidence using them. These cards cover a range of topics – from purchasing fare and using a PRESTO card, to planning trips and checking bus and train schedules for the GO and UP Express – offering text-based, step-by-step instructions enhanced with visual cues and audio.
An initiative like this not only promotes user autonomy and exploration, it underscores an effort to empower all community members, regardless of their backgrounds, to participate and engage in their daily activities with confidence, further contributing to a purpose-driven society where all can thrive.
Ensuring equal access and ease of navigation in public transit systems is a cornerstone of an inclusive community. Metrolinx’s work towards ensuring all Ontario riders can navigate its systems is about more than travelling to the next stop – it’s about ensuring everyone is aboard and no one is left behind.
