Definition

Report the union or association affiliation data where:

  • fees or dues for the union or association are deducted from the member's pay; and
  • it is a recognized bargaining union or association (i.e., it must have authority to bargain under the Labour Relations Act or the Police Services Act).

If these two conditions are not met, the member's affiliation is Management/Union Exempt/Non-union or Elected official for councillors and mayors.

Report the affiliation's “parent” information, not the local group or international association. For example: report the affiliation as:

  • CUPE, not CUPE 106
  • Police Association, not Toronto Police Association
  • Professional Fire Fighters Association, not International Fire Fighters.

Each membership record can only have one affiliation. If the member belongs to more than one association and/or union, report only the affiliation that meets the above definition.
