Reminder: COVID Alert App

October 14, 2020

As we head into what looks like a second wave of the pandemic in some communities across the province, it’s important to continue to remain vigilant about social distancing, washing your hands and staying home when you are not feeling well. These are just a few things that you can do to keep yourself and your families safe. In addition, the Government of Canada has also developed an app to help you identify if you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Here’s how it works:

Government of Canada’s COVID Alert App helps identify if you have been in close contact with someone – more than 15 minutes, less than 2 metres apart – over the past 14 days who has since tested positive for the virus.

The app relies on people who have tested positive for the infection to enter a code they receive when diagnosed into the app that then generates a notice to people with whom they have been in close contact over the preceding two weeks.

The app is available on the Apple iTunes or Google Play store. To be sure that you are downloading the right and official app, use the link provided above that will point you from the Canadian Federal Government’s website directly to where the app is available on either Apple iTunes or Google Play.

The Privacy Commissioner of Canada and Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario have reviewed and support the use of the app.

The app is one more tool – along with physical distance, personal protective equipment, and handwashing to help us reduce the spread of the virus.
