OMERS executive appointed to Ontario pension tribunal

July 16, 2010

Jennifer Brown, OMERS Executive Vice President and Chief Pension Officer, has been appointed to the Ontario Financial Services Tribunal by Premier Dalton McGuinty. Ms. Brown's appointment for a two-year term is effective immediately.

The Financial Services Tribunal is an independent body, acting as adjudicator for conflicts and disputes related to the provision of pension benefits, wind-up of pension plans, and the like. The Tribunal has the jurisdiction to determine questions of fact or law from proceedings, set rules and policies for proceedings, and order parties to pay costs.

"I'm honoured to be appointed, and I look forward to the responsibility of serving on the Tribunal," says Ms. Brown. "The Tribunal essentially provides an avenue of appeal for members of a pension plan, if they disagree with a plan sponsor's decisions."

Ms. Brown has been with OMERS since 2001, and has more than 20 years of experience in pension administration and policy in the private and public sectors. Ms. Brown has held a number of management positions with the Ontario government, with responsibility for strategic policy direction in pensions and employee benefits. Ms. Brown has served as a trustee at OPSEU Pension Trust, including two years as Chair. Her private sector experience includes pensions and employee benefits at Unisys Canada Inc. and Abitibi Consolidated Inc.

Since August 2009, Ms. Brown has been a member of the Advisory Council on Pensions and Retirement Income, appointed by the Ontario Minister of Finance. The Council provides feedback to the Minister on pension reform proposals, implementation issues, and stakeholder points of view.
