OMERS named one of GTA's Best 50 Employers by Hewitt Associates

Survey results based on employee feedback; company ranks 28th

TORONTO (June 24, 2010) - Employee development and empowerment are just two reasons why OMERS has earned a spot on the 2010 list of Best Employers in the Greater Toronto Area.

The list was compiled by Hewitt Associates and reviewed employee engagement levels at over 250 organizations. The results were announced in The Toronto Star on June 18, with OMERS ranked 28th on the list, the only pension plan included.

OMERS has been on Hewitt's list of 50 Best Employers in Canada for the past two years and is proud to be considered one of the GTA's best workplaces. President and CEO Michael Nobrega praised the organization's employees for creating a special environment.

"A company can only be as good as the employees who work there, and I'm proud to lead a unique group of people. Not only do we have a track record of exceptional service, we also have highly engaged employees who take pride and ownership in the work they perform," he said. "Being recognized by Hewitt in their list of 50 Best Employers in Canada and their Best Employers in the GTA is a tribute to our employees' dedication and teamwork."

Why are OMERS employees giving their company high ratings? Opportunities for growth and strong leadership were cited by two employees who explained why OMERS deserved to be recognized on the list.

"There is so much focus in developing people and they give people the opportunity to make decisions and to have an impact," said Mike Balneaves, Director, Operations Services, IT. "I like the way OMERS strives to have a comfortable working environment for everyone and their focus on people makes a huge difference."

Carm Hyde, Manager, Client Services, said that employees care about the membership and receive a lot of support from their leadership team. Hewitt cites strong leadership as one important element in fostering strong engagement.

"There's a real culture of teamwork with an emphasis on integrity, trust, and excellent customer service," she explained. "Our leaders communicate the company's growth plan, they offer career opportunities, and discuss challenges with us. That keeps us motivated and allows each person to achieve greater potential which results in work satisfaction."

OMERS employees are also actively involved in their community. Strong support for the United Way resulted in record-breaking fundraising efforts in 2009, with employees raising more than $450,000. In June 2010, the company hosted Volunteer Days, a two-week period that saw teams of employees helping out with more than 2,000 volunteer hours at nine GTA charitable agencies.

OMERS also received the distinction of 2010 Pension Fund of the Year, Canada from World Finance magazine in February.
