Receiving a disability pension?
What if you get better?
If, before you reach your normal retirement age you cease to be disabled, or you return to work, please contact OMERS immediately.
Send us a signed letter including:
- your full name (printed)
- your OMERS reference number, or your social insurance number and former employer’s name or group number
- your address and telephone number
- the date you ceased to be disabled.
and, if you returned to work:
- the date you returned to work
- the name of your current employer
- indicate whether your work is considered to be rehabilitative or your regular duties.
Rehabilitative work
If you return to work while on a disability pension, in most cases, your pension stops. The exception is “rehabilitative” work. This work must be approved by OMERS for your disability pension to continue.
Rehabilitative work is a transition period between total disability status and a return to normal duties or to a new permanent occupation (either full-time or part-time). Rehabilitative work generally lasts weeks or months, but not years.
If you have returned to work in any capacity, please have your employer contact OMERS immediately.
Workers’ compensation benefits
Your OMERS disability pension and your Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) benefits combined cannot total more than 85% of your most recent annual earnings. If your OMERS disability pension payments plus WSIB benefits exceed 85% of your annual earnings immediately before you were disabled, we must reduce your OMERS disability pension until you reach your normal retirement date or your WSIB benefits decrease or stop.
Once you reach your normal retirement date or if you take early retirement, this limit no longer applies.
For most members, your normal retirement date is the last day of the month in which you turn 65. But for police officers and firefighters it may be age 60.
If you become entitled to a WSIB benefit after your disability pension begins, or if the amount you are receiving changes (except for cost of living increases), please notify OMERS immediately.
