OMERS Facts

A look back on 2007…

OMERS membership continues to grow. At the end of 2007, membership grew to over 380,000, 2.2% more than 2006.

There are more than:

  • 242,000 active members working for 910 employers; and
  • 103,000 retired members and survivors receiving pension benefits.

The number of retirees continues to rise as the baby boom generation retires or approaches retirement. This year will be the first time outside of the contribution holiday that our pension payments are expected to exceed contributions to the Plan.

In 2007, retirement and other pension payments totaled $1.8 billion, an increase of $0.1 billion over 2006. The increase reflected new retirements, the adjustment of benefits for inflation and higher pension values for new retirees compared with those already receiving benefits.
